Week of Welcome: Bagels & Coffee

August 22 & 23 | LA 114 | 9am - 11am

Fall semester begins on August 21st! Welcome to all of our new and continuing UVU students. Come and visit us in LA 114 for FREE bagels and coffee! Hosted by the Multicultural Student Council. 

 

Safe Zone Training

August 25 | LA 116 Seminar Room | 10am - 12pm

Safe Zone training is about fostering an environment of inclusion for lesbian, gay bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, intersex, allies, and asexual/nonsexual (LGBTQIA*) individuals on our campus and in the surrounding community. The training raises visibility and promotes ally building through:

  • Educating individuals on LGBTQIA* issues relating to gender and sexuality and how one can intervene when they witness discrimination.

  • Creating visibility of people who can provide resources to LGBTQIA* community members.

  • Creating a safe environment on campus free from restrictive transphobia, homophobia, heterosexism and cisgender bias.

InQUEERy Educator Training

Want to become an InQueery Educator? Representing a diverse range of backgrounds and experiences, InQueery is comprised of students, faculty, and staff who identify as LGBTQIA+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Queer/Questioning, Intersex, Asexual/Agender, etcetera). InQueery Educators speak on educational panels concerning LGBTQIA+ issues. 

InQueery is an educational program provided by LGBT Student Services that is devoted to education, outreach, and advocacy regarding issues of sexual orientation and gender identity/expression. Through these endeavors, InQueery seeks to foster an inclusive campus community that welcomes, understands, and supports the identities and experiences of every individual.

Every Wednesday | LA 116 Seminar Room | 3pm - 4:30pm

The LGBTQ Discussion Group is a weekly, one and a half hour long dialogue focused on topics related to sexual orientation and gender identity and expression. The emphasis of the discussion group is to establish and maintain community. It is open to any UVU student, faculty or staff, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity and expression, who can offer an affirmative presence concerning LGBTQIA+ issues. 

Attendance implies acknowledgement of the policy that the names of participants and the personal issues discussed are maintained in strict confidence. We also ask, especially as a group for LGBTQIA+ folks, that all participants are respectful of the diversity among group members in terms of perspective, personal experience, and choices about how we each live our lives.

Diversity Lecture Series: Unpacking Charlottesville

Diversity Lecture Series is a complimentary program to Diversity Dialogues.  It is hosted either on the same week as Diversity Dialogues or around such discussion.  Diversity Lectures allows a deeper contact into social issues.  Members from the community, Higher Education Institutions, and professionals will educate and explore such topics.

Bachata Fest: Fall 2017

September 29 | UCCU Events Center | 9pm - 2am

Kick off the year with Utah's largest Latino dance event! Bachata is a genre of music that originated in the Dominican Republic, and Bachata fest includes cumbia, merengue, salsa, and more! This is not an event you want to miss! Don't know how to dance Bachata? Don't worry! We will provide lessons from 9pm - 10pm and the dancing starts afterwards!

Tickets are $10 and can be purchased online and in person at UVU Campus Connection.

 

Bowling with LGBT Student Services & Spectrum 

September 29 | SL Bowling Alley | 3pm - 5pm

All are welcome to join LGBT Student Services and Spectrum in bowling. This will be a fun kick off event for the UVU community to learn about the services, events, and resources LGBT Student Services provides, as well as socialize with Spectrum: Queer Student Alliance at UVU. Cultural Rhythms: LGBTQIA+

Culture is a significant aspect of all of our identities, and plays a role in shaping who we are, where we come from, and what we believe in. Through Cultural Rhythms, we will be able to share with others the beliefs, knowledge, and perspectives that exist within each spotlighted culture and begin to understand each others' differences, while sharing in our similarities and inspiring each other to learn something new about other cultures and identities.
